While reading this I couldn’t help but think of what we’re doing at Invisible Children. Ending a war through the creativity of film and the mobilization of young people (primarily) is a new concept and we are having to fight the “slacktivist” stereotype and the “too-young-to-know-better” paradigm on a daily basis. The creative spirit and the belief in what we’re doing makes it well worth it. Give it a read.

If you’re a creative you already know how this starts. We create to learn, to inspire, to be helpful to others, to change our lives (or that of those around us), to do something purposeful.

Last night was awesome and we can’t thank Edison Chair and Neulore enough for giving incredible sets last night. We took some video footage and are going to be cutting together a video recap of the night, which will be up on the blog later, but we wanted to get some pictures up as soon as possible.

Again, thank you so much to the bands and those who came out. It was a great way to kick off our summer series and we’re really excited about the possibilities in the future. We have some big ideas for shows coming up throughout the summer so be sure to stay tuned here, on our Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/austin.streetteam.7), on Twitter (@Kony2012Austin) or on Instagram (ATXStreetTeam).

We figured summer would be the perfect time to get together some rad bands and hopefully have a series of shows around Austin.

Soooo, to that end, we are really excited to announce the first show of our summer series on Monday, June 18th at Beale Street Tavern in downtown Austin. The lineup includes Nashville-based indie folk band Neulore and local Austinites Edison Chair and Waking Fable. Stay tuned for information on door times and cover charges in the next few days on our twitter (@Kony2012Austin) and our facebook (https://www.facebook.com/austin.streetteam.7) and don’t hesitate to throw questions and suggestions our way.

Now, some information about the bands who will be part of our first Invisible Children-ATX show:

Neulore (http://neulore.bandcamp.com/) was heralded by popular Nashville blog, Music City Unsigned, as the “Band To Watch” and their sound was described by valslist.com as “much like the Fleet Foxes or Horse Feathers with its ambient folk melodies & harmonies. They have fashioned sound and spirit, wood and string, current and wire to bring lyric to life. The result is a collection of songs that have become as beautiful as the story they seek to share. The timeless story, told in modern tones.”. We are stoked to have this quintet partnering with us on our inaugural summer series show.

Edison Chair joined forces in 2007 and quickly garnered attention from big time producers and major labels like Interscope Records. SXSW said that the Austin band “honors the style of timeless rock such as The Who and The Beatles, while making innovative strides in the wake of popular modern bands such as The Fratellis and Oasis.” Check out their stuff here http://www.reverbnation.com/edisonchair and come hear them live on the 18th.

Waking Fable is a newcomer to the Austin music scene, having just formed a few months ago. They describe themselves as an “acoustic soul quintet…with a saxophone”. Check ‘em out here https://www.facebook.com/wakingfable.

After top commander Caesar Achellam was captured a few weeks...

After top commander Caesar Achellam was captured a few weeks ago, this command structure is finally being shaken up.

Seamstress of Last Month: Atek Lilly

Mend is a social enterprise geared toward facilitating financial independence and development for women in Gulu, Uganda directly affected by the LRA conflict.

Lilly joined the Mend family in February, and only 3 months later she has earned the title of Seamstress of the Month. She may be new, but Lilly has integrated seamlessly into the Mend program, even counseling and advising the other new seamstresses along the way.

Lilly likes the structure of her workday at Mend which keeps her busy and learning new skills. In her previous work, she used a foot-operated sewing machine, so she was most excited to learn how to operate an electric machine.

“She is positive, eager to learn new things, and very focused on her work,” said Richard, the Tailoring Supervisor at Mend.

Lilly is a single mother raising four boys, so she uses her income from Mend to pay school fees and buy food. She is also saving any extra money she earns so that one day she can build a house for all of them to live in. Well done, Lilly!

We already knew that, but the 2nd Street Soundcheck event we went to on Saturday really proved it. Some of my favorite musical sounds come from a band called Seryn, from Denton, TX. I’ve never had the chance to see them live, and considering they were dubbed “Best Performance” at SXSW this year by Paste Magazine, I was beyond stoked to finally get the chance to see them (and for FREE, too).

The event in the 2nd Street District downtown wasn’t only a draw for us because of Seryn and the other sweet sounds of bands like Rogue Wave and Polica, it was also sponsored and attended by some awesome local non profits and really rad globally-conscious companies, like the ONE Campaign, Comfort the Children International, the Whole Foods Whole Planet Foundation, Big Ass Canvas and Raven and Lily.

We tasted local food, heard some incredible music and made connections with some of the non profits and companies in attendance. It was the start of some beautiful relationships with local Austin organizations and we’re really excited for what’s in store for Invisible Children-Austin.

I hope your weekend was as good as ours was. Enjoy a beautiful and productive week here in the Live Music Capital of the World!

To stand out: try stuff, even when it's crap.

To stand out: try stuff, even when it's crap.:
We are learning this lesson more and more each day.
Go kayaking (Town Lake and Lake Austin)

Attend Austin City Limits Festival

Attend SXSW music festival

Eat at Franklin’s bbq

Swim in Barton Springs-spring-fed and over 900 feet long

Hike Mount Bonnell

Play disk golf at Zilker Park

Hike/Bike/Fish Lady Bird Lake

Eat at Torchy’s Tacos

Go to Amy’s ice cream and have them throw the ice cream across the street (apparently it’s a thing?)

Go to Sno-Beach and get sno cones

Eat Gingerbread pancakes at Magnolia Cafe — Just go to Magnolia Cafe in general, says Lindy.

Cliff jumping at Lake Travis

Eat breakfast burritos at the original Whole Foods

Have a cake shake at the Holy Cacao food trailer

Have something from each of the trailers in the iconic South Austin Trailer Park & Eatery (Torchy’s Tacos, Holy Cacao and Man Bites Dog) in one sitting.

Find and take a picture with Leslie, the famous homeless man.

This is phase one of THE LIST. Let us know if you have any more ideas for us to add.
